Earth Festival 2011 Invites Participants, Support

MILFORD – Otsego County Conservation Association and Wildlife Learning Company announced this week that letters seeking supporters and participants for Earth Festival 2011 have been mailed to area businesses, organizations and individuals. Financial contributions are most welcome, and an open invitation to earth-friendly exhibitors, food and retail vendors, and workshop presenters is being extended.

Earth Festival 2011 is free and open to the public, and will be held on Saturday, April 9 at Milford Central School. This year’s event will include the traditional information and vendor fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the gymnasium. The Milford Central School Education Foundation will also host a “Pottery for Education” Silent Auction during Earth Festival and will end the day with a special “recycled fashion” show. Tickets for the fashion show are $10.00 per person or $60.00 for a table of eight.

Designers are wanted for the Go Green! Fashion Show, and students from other area schools are invited to participate. Entries are $5.00 each, with prizes to be awarded in categories including accessories, casual wear, formal wear and recycled “treasure.” For more information and an entry form, call Lori Henry or Lorre Gregory at (607) 286-7721, extension 8408. Fashion show tickets can be purchased by calling this number as well.

Earth Festival 2011 will also mark the unveiling of the BigFoot Baler, used in agricultural plastics recycling, and the launch of a countywide farmers’ market cookbook. Other highlights include a pre-festival bird walk led by Dave Kiehm, president of the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society, and children’s activities led by Milford Central School students. CADE (Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship) will again serve up local beef burgers from Sunset View Farm, Milford, and other local foods.

The EcoArt/Trendy Trash contest returns to Earth Festival this year as well. This trash-to-treasure challenge to create something practical or artistic from items that have outlived their original purpose is open at no charge to students, with a $5.00 fee for adults. Visit www.occainfo.org for an entry form, or call (607) 547-4488 to learn more.

In keeping with the earth-friendly theme, a number of items will be collected for recycling. Event organizers invite attendees to drop off Styrofoam (clean and white only), bubble wrap, athletic shoes, empty inkjet cartridges, old cell phones, unwanted videotapes and CDs, and used nylon monofilament fishing line at no charge. Edison Computers will be on hand for an electronics collection (some fees will apply).

Now in its sixth year, Earth Festival is an environmentally-focused, interactive event featuring exhibits, activities, vendors and entertainment, all with a fun, earth-friendly twist. Earth Festival 2011 is sponsored by Otsego County Conservation Association and Wildlife Learning Company. To register as an exhibitor or vendor, visit admin.
