Dear Friends of Otsego 2000:

It is now more than a year since we wrote to you seeking financial support for our ongoing efforts to stop the transformation of our region into an industrialized gas extraction zone. Since that time, we have endured the re-fracturing of the Ross 1 well in Maryland and the disruption of seismic testing in Middlefield. We are told again and again that drilling companies such as Gastem, already established in the county, plan to install multiple vertical wells while they wait for horizontal wells to be approved by New York State.

Over the past year, we have spent considerable time and resources supporting our local towns in educating their citizens and municipal boards regarding the drilling practices being proposed and helping them to understand the impacts these practices will have on their communities. We have organized and participated in numerous public forums, attended Town and County meetings, submitted detailed comments on the laws and zoning amendments presented for public hearings in Otsego, Middlefield and Springfield, and maintained a robust website and information library. We have also commissioned a map of the potential build-out of gas wells in Otsego County and have assisted several citizen groups in mailing out town-by-town public opinion surveys. In addition, we submitted extensive comments to the EPA and have continued to work with statewide coalitions to present our particular perspective on issues of statewide concern.

We are now gearing up to respond to the revised draft SGEIS which Governor Cuomo has now ordered released on July 1. To do this effectively, we will need the assistance and expertise of legal, scientific, and conservation experts, and at the same time must plan for assisting in the defense of towns that choose to fight to retain their home rule. The urgency of this work as well as the number of towns and neighborhood groups requesting assistance has grown exponentially as citizens learn more about the harmful impacts of shale gas drilling. To continue to provide help as needed to the broadest number of citizens, we need your financial support.

Please make a donation now to support our efforts. We thank you in advance for your generosity, your encouragement, and your commitment to protecting this historic, incomparable region, which is our home, and our children’s legacy. It is under threat as never before, but with your generous support we will not waver in its defense.

With respect and appreciation,
