Village Announces Trademark

The Village of Cooperstown is pleased to announce that they have received a trademark for Doubleday Field. Attached is an informational letter that may be helpful to your membership. Please feel free to publish the letter as part of your e-news or other membership publications and/or provide it to interested/affected parties and businesses.

The Village of Cooperstown’s trademark DOUBLEDAY FIELD® for various "entertainment services," such as baseball games, was registered at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on May 17, 2011 (U.S. Reg. No. 3,960,310). This Registration is the flagship in promoting DOUBLEDAY FIELD — the mythological birthplace of baseball — as another one of Cooperstown’s destinations and brands..

The Village’s plan is to apply for more registrations of DOUBLEDAY FIELD™ and the official DOUBLEDAY FIELD™ logo that it has developed. These registrations will cover products on which the trademark and the logo can be used. The aim of the Village is to control this trademark and collect royalties for its use while assuring that it is used on quality products by making trademark licensing agreements with businesses. You should also be aware that the Village has a "location agreement" that covers television and film companies that want to use the Field as a background for shoots.

The Village offers very simple licenses to use the DOUBLEDAY FIELD™ word mark and logo, and a number of Cooperstown businesses have signed on. The word mark and the logo can be used for a small per piece royalty, or other arrangements can be made such a flat licensing fee.

The official logo mark may only be used by agreement and the payment of license fees. The Village is not intending at this time to take any action with regard to "nominative" or "descriptive" uses of the DOUBLEDAY FIELD™ word mark. In other words, one can offer a T-shirt saying "I Got a Hit at Doubleday Field" and Doubleday Field is not in a type face or size that sets it apart, then the use would describe where the purported base hit took place. One cannot offer a T-shirt that says, for example, "DOUBLEDAY FIELD, est. 1920" because that is a trademark use.
