CUCUMBERS at the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market

July 21, 2011
CFM Cumcumbers
C U C U M B E R S are the cool vegetable, 30 degrees cooler on the inside than on the outside. That is cool! Cucumbers contain vitamin C and caffeic acid, two antioxidant nutrients that can help protect the skin from sun damage, handy for the summer! Please stop by the market tomorrow to sample our wonderful Cucumber Water, a refreshing Canadian treat that is sure to please on a hot day.

M E A T and P O U L T R Y for the BBQ. Gaia’s Breath has fresh organic pork, chicken, and veal. Raindance Farm, home of the wonderful asiago-style Sun Cheese will have fresh organic veal and chicken this week. And try Acrospire’s sliced ‘side pork’ — the bacon, before it is smoked or cured, very tastey!
F R E S H H E R B S . The Herb Cupboard recommends you add Lovage to your herb garden. It is a great native plant and substitute for celery, easy to grow, comes up every year, contains less sodium than the commerical varieties of celery – I am a convert, Sheri started me on Lovage last year.

J A M S A N D J E L L I E S . Summers End Orchard is really jammin’ now, they have gooseberry and black current jam… and it is FABULOUS!
I understand the kiwi fruit is in the gooseberry family, they do resemble one another, only vastly different in size.
H O M E – B A K E D G O O D I E S . At the Taste of Britain, Perry, our resident Welshman, has authentic gridle cakes. What are they called you might ask, pronouned ‘ta-tion arr mine,’ spelled ‘teisan ary maen,’ and translated "a cake baked on a stone." Perry even has his mothers, ‘stone’ or what my grandmother called, the griddle.
H E R I T A G E T O M A T O E S . Acrospire Farm has many varieties in a rainbow of colors, orange, yellow, green and red. N E W P O T A T O E S, The Farm offers a beautiful range of organic veggies and eggs which includes this week walla walla and the cipollini varieties of onions, as well as new potatoes .
