Ever since I started the Festival 13 years ago, I’ve wanted to feature the American String Quartet, my distinguished colleagues at the Manhattan School of Music. The dates finally worked out, and this Monday, they will perform for you at the Otesaga Hotel. Internationally recognized as one of the world’s foremost quartets, the American String Quartet celebrates its 36th season in 2011-2012. This summer they were quartet-in-residence at Colorado’s Aspen Music Festival and China’s Great Wall International Music Academy. They will perform Haydn Quartet op. 77, no. 1, the Ferdinand Ries Flute Quartet and the Ravel String Quartet in F Major/ Get to Know the American String Quartet

This video shows the Quartet performing the first movement of the Ravel. I’ve heard from many of you that you enjoyed the clip I sent of them last week, so thought I would include another.

In a recent interview, violist Daniel Avshalomov talked about how the string quartet "is the last functioning democracy on earth," how they work through disagreements, and how his viola, made in Cremona, Italy in 1568 by Andrea Amati, sounds like dark chocolate. Read the full interview here…

There is a Sound Sample library on the American String Quartet website, along with biographical inforamtoin and more.

If you have yet to purchase tickets, they are available online,, by phone through Brown Paper Tickets, 800/838-3006, and at the door.

Thanks for your time, look forward to seeing you at the Festival!
