Safe Kids International Walk Day

August 15, 2011

SAFE KIDS OF OTSEGO COUNTY TO HOST INTERNATIONAL WALK DAY
Schools Invited

For the third consecutive year, Safe Kids of Otsego County will host the International Walk to School Day in Otsego County; the event is Wednesday, October 5. Last year over 278,000 children, parents and community leaders around the country joined together in celebration of this Safe Kids event sponsored by FedEx. In Otsego County, Schenevus Central School participated for the last two years and in 2010, Richfield Springs Elementary joined in the walk. They helped to heighten awareness in promoting safety, engaging children in physical activity and inspire healthy living according to Rich McCaffery, a community Educator with Bassett Healthcare Network and Safe Kids of Otsego County.

The purpose of the event is to focus on pedestrian safety issues. Pedestrian injury is a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States for children ages 5 to 14, claiming the lives of 244 children in 2009 alone. Each year pedestrian fatalities comprise about 11 percent of all traffic fatalities and there are approximately 4,100 pedestrian deaths. Another 59,000 pedestrians are injured in roadway crashes annually. In 2009, there were 13,000 nonfatal pedestrian child injuries.

If your school is interested in participating on October 5 and joining others across America and nine other countries, contact Rich McCaffery at richard.mccaffery<mailto:richard.mccaffery> or 607-547-5256 for assistance. This is a community wide celebration with everyone joining together to promote pedestrian safety, incorporate exercise in daily routine and spending quality time together.

Safe Kids of Otsego County works to prevent unintentional childhood injury, the leading cause of death and disability to children ages 1 to 14 and is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing unintentional injury. Safe Kids of Otsego County is led by Bassett Healthcare Network.
