September 7, 2011

"With regard to the public hearing schedule on the state’s revised Draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement on the Oil, Gas and Solution Mining Regulatory Program, OCCA also reached out to Governor Cuomo and DEC Commissioner Joseph Martens on behalf of our 800-plus membership.

In the letter, OCCA asked that DEC ensure a transparent and accessible public comment period on the dSGEIS, with ample time and opportunity for the public to weigh in on this important document. In addition to an extended public comment period, we also asked DEC to consider additional public hearings in Otsego and neighboring counties, where public interest has been shown to be high."

OCCA COMMENTS ON PROPOSED SRBC RULE CHANGES, DRAFT SGEIS COMMENT PERIOD: The Otsego County Conservation Association today filed formal comments on proposed changes in rulemaking by the Susquehanna River Basin Commission and the current public comment period on the state’s revised Draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement on the Oil Gas and Solution Mining Regulatory Program. With regard to water use and withdrawal project rule changes approved on June 23, OCCA asked that the SRBC further consider the possible risks posed by unconventional gas drilling and related development to clean water, aquatic life, and human health before adopting the proposed changes to 18 CFR Part 806. In a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joseph Martens, OCCA has asked that DEC ensure a transparent and accessible public comment period on the dSGEIS, with ample time and opportunity for the public to weigh in on this important document.
