CFM Painted Goat State Fair Winners
C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to Painted Goat Farm!!

Winners of the Blue Ribbon at the New York State Fair Cheese Competition
In addition they received Awards of Excellence for two of their other cheeses. The awards were received in the Open Class for "Cheese made from milk other than cow’s milk," which may include all styles of cheese from goat, sheep, or this year, even buffalo milk.

The gold metal cheese was a fresh goat cheese encrusted in sundried tomatoes and herbs. Two other Painted Goat cheeses tied for 3rd, both receiving scores of 97/100: their Greek-style feta and an aged cheese they call "Cinderella," a cheese dusted in wood ash and aged like a Brie.

While their artisan cheeses have developed a loyal following with consumers in local farmers’ markets, cheese retailers in select stores across New York State, and chefs at local food establishments like Brewery Ommegang and the Otesaga Resort Hotel, this was the first formal recognition they have received. Owner and cheese maker, Ilyssa Berg says of the recognition, "Although it’s the people who eat our cheese that matter most, it feels really good to know our cheese stands up to professional scrutiny and stands out among others."

Painted Goat is a small, family farm in the town of Garrattsville in Otsego County, New York. They began their dairy and cheese processing facility exactly four years ago. The husband and wife team built their home and "cheese house" themselves, including underground aging cellars they call, "the cave." They milk 60 goats, pasteurize the milk, and make and age their cheeses all on the premises.

Stop by the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market on Saturday, 9-2 to congratulate Ilyssa Berg and taste for yourself the award winning cheeses of Painted Goat Farm.
